The Neglected Global Diseases Initiative at UBC and Universities Allied for Essential Medicines hosted Creating Change, Creating Impact as part of the Celebrate Research Week on March 4, 2011.
The event consisted of four seminar presentations. It was faciliated by Dr. Kishor Wasan, Professor, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and CIHR/iCo Therapeutics Research Chair in Drug Delivery for Neglected Global Diseases.

Dr. Lindsay Eltis
Dr. Lindsay Eltis, the Director of the Centre for TB Research and a Professor of Microbiology, gave a presentation titled “Tuberculosis: The Modern Face of an Ancient Scourge”. He has been at UBC since 1999, has authored over 100 articles in the field, and is an Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. His current research interests focus on bacterial oxygenases, particularly those involved in the catabolism of steroid and aromatic compounds.

Dr. Rebecca Goulding
Dr. Rebecca Goulding, a consultant working on alternative intellectual property, regulatory and financial innovation strategies to promote biomedical innovation for neglected diseases, then spoke about “Open Innovation and Neglected Diseases”. Her involvement with a student group called Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM), has inspired her interest in global health research, particularly in the area of neglected disease drug research.

Mr. Angus Livingstone
Mr. Angus Livingstone, the Managing Director of the University-Liaison Office (UILO) at UBC, discussed “Global Access Principles: Dream versus Reality”. The UILO conducts the technology transfer and commercialization activities at UBC. UBC currently has over 250 licenses with companies around the world and has actively supported the creation of over 140 spin-off companies.

Dr. Peter von Dadelszen
Dr. Peter von Dadelszen gave a presentation titled “Reducing Maternal Mortality in Lower– Middle‐Income Countries”. He is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UBC and Consultant in Maternal‐Fetal Medicine, Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of BC. He recently was awarded a $7 million four year grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for his research. His areas of interest are pre‐eclampsia and pregnancy hypertension, from basic science to clinical epidemiology and health services research.
